Hidden green oasis for relaxation: The Fairy Tale Fountain

Volkspark Friedrichshain is in itself a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of Berlin in summer. The fairy tale fountain is a special attraction in the park.

The complex dates back to the imperial era and is brimming with history. The huge fountain was completed in 1913 and features more than 100 stone sculptures depicting scenes from well-known fairy tales as well as hunting animals.

You can sit down, read a book, or have a picnic with friends while listening to the splashing water. You’ll quickly forget that you’re in Germany’s most vibrant metropolis.

Address: Am Friedrichshain, 10249 Berlin

Opening hours: daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

An authentic summer café that not everyone knows about: La Maison

If you’re looking for a taste of French lifestyle during your summer in Berlin, we have a special tip for you: La Maison on Paul-Lincke-Ufer.

The café serves what are probably the best croissants in the whole city, as well as various other French baked goods. You can get them at the café counter, but you’ll have to accept that some items may be sold out.

Alternatively, you can pre-order your favorites on the café’s website until 11 p.m. the night before and then pick them up at the agreed time. This way, you’re guaranteed to get your pain au chocolat, cinnamon roll, or kouign amann.

You can also purchase various types of bread, cakes, and packaged coffee at La Maison. Most of the café’s employees have a connection to France and are therefore familiar with the world of authentic patisserie.

The café’s location on the Paul-Lincke-Ufer promenade is also ideal. The sun shines on the spacious terrace all day long, allowing you to enjoy your pastries and coffee even more.

And when you’re done, you can stroll along the promenade and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

In addition to the café on Paul-Lincke-Ufer, La Maison has two other branches in Berlin, namely on Urbanstraße and Herrfurthplatz.

Address: Paul-Lincke-Ufer 17, 10999 Berlin

Opening hours: Mon. to Thu. 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fri. 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sat. 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Unknown swimming spot: Flughafensee

Lakes such as Wannsee and Müggelsee are on everyone’s lips when it comes to swimming in Berlin. Fortunately, however, there are also a few lakes whose beaches are not hopelessly overcrowded in summer. One of them is Flughafensee.

This quarry pond owes its name to its proximity to Tegel Airport. At up to 34.3 meters, it is the deepest lake in Berlin.

The north side is characterized by a spacious bathing beach where you are sure to find a quiet spot for sunbathing.

Because the lake is not managed as a swimming lake, you don’t have to pay an entrance fee, but you also have to do without all amenities. There is only a toilet container; there are no lifeguards or snack bars.

In addition, caution is advised in some areas of the lake because the embankment could slip. However, signs warn of this danger. The water quality is regularly tested and is therefore proven to be excellent.

Incidentally, the lake is surrounded by forest with winding paths. So if you feel like extending your trip into nature after swimming, a hike along the lake shore is a good idea. In addition, Lake Tegel is not far away.

Address: Allee St. Exupery 45, 13405 Berlin

Opening hours: around the clock

Cultural summer insider tip away from the tourist crowds: Teufelsberg

If you’re in the mood for art and culture in Berlin in the summer, then Teufelsberg is the place to go. It rises about 120 meters above sea level and is the highest point in the city after the Arkenberge mountains.

However, Teufelsberg is not a natural mountain, but consists of construction waste that was dumped there over a period of more than 20 years. In total, the elevation consists of the rubble of around 15,000 buildings that were destroyed during World War II. In 1972, the site was beautified with soil and sand and planted with a million trees.

A characteristic feature of Teufelsberg is a former US listening station with several round towers. Part of the building is now used as a street art gallery, with numerous murals by internationally renowned artists adorning the walls of the building.

As part of a street art tour, you can have a guide show you the artworks and explain them to you. Incidentally, you also have a wonderful view of Berlin from the roof of the main building.

There is an admission fee for Teufelsberg, and the tour also costs money. This is used to finance the maintenance of the site.

Address: Teufelsseechaussee 10, 14193 Berlin

Opening hours: daily from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., last admission 1 hour before closing

Insider tip for foodies in summer: Café am Neuen See

Even if the name doesn’t sound like it, Café am Neuen See is a restaurant with an adjoining beer garden that offers an unexpected variety of dishes.

It starts with breakfast, where you can choose between classic and exotic options. Breakfast is served from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on weekdays and until 4 p.m. on weekends. This makes the location the ideal choice for brunch with friends.

From 12 p.m. onwards, the kitchen is ready for lunch. The selection includes salads, pizza, tarte flambée, pasta, fish, and meat. Of course, vegetarian and vegan meals are also on the menu.

The meal is rounded off with delicious desserts – especially homemade ice cream. While you enjoy your meal, you can look out over the Neuer See lake in the Tiergarten. After your meal, you can also rent a boat and take a trip out onto the lake.

Address: Lichtensteinallee 2, 10787 Berlin

Opening hours: daily from 9 a.m. to midnight

Nightlife with a difference: Klunkerkranich

Every summer day in Berlin comes to an end at some point. To turn night into day, we recommend Klunkerkranich in Neukölln. The location is on the sixth floor of the Neukölln Arcaden shopping center, covering an area of more than 1,000 square meters.

At Klunkerkranich, you can expect an oasis above the rooftops of the city, where you can experience the diversity of Berlin’s club culture. Exclusive DJ sets by well-known artists from the electronic music scene alternate with performances by promising newcomers.

The club’s premises house the indoor floor “Hinter den Alpen” and the bar floor “Wohnzimmer.” In addition, there is the outdoor area “Ostflügel,” which is the venue for various events. There, you can also enjoy a delicious drink while taking in the view over Berlin.

Address: Karl-Marx-Straße 66, 12043 Berlin

Opening hours: Mon–Wed: from 6 p.m., Thu–Sun: from 4 p.m.
