The best currywurst in Berlin

EastSeven Hostel Berlin Lounge

Berlin is clearly the cradle of the currywurst. After all, Berlin native Herta Heuwer is considered the inventor of the typical curry sauce. What was considered a sensation back then, shortly after the Second World War, is now one of Berlin’s best-known specialties. But where can you find the best currywurst in Berlin? We give you 10 recommendations so that you can enjoy the special taste of currywurst during your stay at EastSeven.

Our top 10 of the best currywurst in Berlin

In 1949, Herta Heuwer opened a snack bar in Charlottenburg where she offered her “special curry sausage”. She did not use ketchup for the sauce, but tomato paste, which she seasoned with spices. From then on, the currywurst became a cult dish and began its triumphal march through the capital and the entire country. There are now countless currywurst stalls in Berlin where you can get this delicious fast food. So if you are sightseeing in the city and staying at EastSeven, you should definitely not miss out on a typical Berlin currywurst.

Our currywurst tip no. 1: Konnopke’s Imbiß

Just like Herta Heuwer, the name Max Konnopke is also firmly associated with Berlin currywurst. In 1930, Konnopke moved from Cottbus to Berlin. There he and his wife ran vendor’s stores, initially selling bockwurst, Knacker, Wiener and Krakauer sausages. In 1947, they bought a sausage cart, and in 1960, Konnopke set up a stall that served East Berlin’s first currywurst. Konnopke’s Imbiss still stands where the founders once started selling sausages: on Schönhauser Allee. The snack bar not only serves whole or sliced currywurst, with chips or potato salad on the side, but also boulettes and bockwurst. Where? Schönhauser Allee 44B, 10435 Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg When? Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. More info

Our currywurst tip no. 3: Zur Bratpfanne

In addition to burgers, boulettes and chips, the Bratpfanne naturally also serves currywurst – and has been doing so for more than 70 years. And the recipe for the ketchup is still a well-kept secret. On request, it can be made a little spicier with Tabasco and added to the currywurst with or without casing. Because the Steglitz location is so popular, there is now a second one in Lichterfelde. Where? Schlossstraße, corner of Kieler Straße, 12163 Berlin-Steglitz Königsberger Straße 30-33, 12207 Berlin-Lichterfelde When?
